Killing's our business

Content

A weathered old man with white hair and a face that has seen it all is fidgeting. These church pews are always rough on the old bones. This is the 3rd funeral this month that Henry has attended. Henry knew that growing old meant losing your friends and loved ones, but at this rate? Julia, his bride of 46 years gives him a sharp poke with her elbow. He knows that means to sit still. As the service comes to an end, he does his usual rounds. He pays his respects to the surviving family and tells a meaningless story about their father's youth to remind them of the man they surely knew better than he did. As things are winding down, Henry and Julia quietly sneak out to go home.

"Don't you think it's a bit odd?" Henry asks.
"What's that?" responds Julia.
"Jim, Mike, Catherine, all of them were in such good health before they passed on and all under 75. How can that be? We have such great insurance and the average person is now living to 98."
"Hmm? Well, they always say death comes in threes."
"I know it's just that... I don't know. Something seems strange about this."
"They probably all worried to much, dear. That's bad for your heart, you know."
"Point taken."
The rest of the ride home is in silence.

Feeling wistful from the funeral, when Henry gets home he gets online to find what the rest of his old friends from the factory are up to. He logs onto his mygroup page for the first time in a few years. Over the years he has friend'd everyone he has worked with. 1200 friends all told. Henry starts noticing right away the black dots next a large number of his friends identifying they are dead. He begins to get a sinking feeling in his stomach. He sorts and finds that 438 of his friends are now dead, none more than 10 years older than him.

Julia walks into the bedroom turned office and tells Henry that she is going to go shopping for the rest of the afternoon. He doesn't really pay attention to his wife and just mutters "yeah yeah." He is too absorbed in his research.

A few hours later, he hears the turning of the door nob and Julia entering their house. "Jules! Come look at this! I think they are killing all of the retirees! Those bastards are trading human life for dollars!" He feels a sharp pinch on his neck. He turns around quickly and sees an unknown man standing before him.

"Yes Henry, we are killing all the retirees. You are dying now."
"Whhh-whyy"
"Self defense. You were killing the corporation, this is just self defense."
"Buh-buh-"
"A corporation is a legal entity. 150 billion in legacy costs in the next 10 years from you blood suckers. And no, we won't be found out. You figured it out, so have the authorities. A blind eye has been turned."

Henry slumps to desk. Heart attack. Age 72.

with baby boomers all nearing retirement and old people being the most expensive part of our failing health system, solutions like this need to be considered

I really don't remember writing that and its absolute crap as written but I like the concept I did.
